Using OWL in Chem 140/150/160
How to get OWL
A 12-month OWL subscription is included with any new textbook purchased from the BCC Bookstore. (FYI: Don't get it confused with Thomson NOW, which is also free with your book).
If you do not have an OWL subscription, you may purchase one from http://owl.thomsonlearning.com
It is $40.49. Select OWL for general chemistry.
IMPORTANT: Use the 3rd ed. textbook link (Chemistry The Molecular Science by Moore, Stanitski, Jurs)
I don't have OWL. Should I buy it? Can I demo it first?
First, your instructor may require you to use OWL as part of the course.
Also, OWL will be very helpful to some students. To find out if it might be helpful for you, go to http://owl.thomsonlearning.com and in the OWL DEMOs section, click 'general' chemistry. For book, choose your textbook cover. Click "View Assignments" and a list of assignments will appear. Try some of the modules--do you think they are helpful? Try some in different chapters. NOTE: If you need to input special characters, as for chemical formulas, then you need to learn how to input them into OWL. The first three OWL assignments go through this. NOTE: None of this is saved (because it's a demo account) so it will not count towards your OWL grade.
How to register
Go to http://owl.thomsonlearning.com and click General chemistry under "LOG IN/REGISTER". Then click on our textbook (Moore, *USE 3rd edition*) and our school. Then click Student Registration to sign up for an account. Make sure you record your new login and password. You will also need to enter your access code.
Which assignments are due?
OWL problems listed as "required" are due by the deadline. Optional assignments are provided for additional practice.
Tips for using OWL
1. Do not procrastinate! It is not very likely you will get help on the due date, so start early and get your questions asked!
2. OWL is rather picky about the format of your responses (it's just a computer program, after all!) So try to be patient, learn how to enter responses, and if you still get the format incorrect after a second attempt, just e-mail your instructor instead of wasting hours on formatting. You need to use your time wisely on OWL!
3. All material in OWL is in your textbook, so you should be able to answer questions in OWL even if it is on material that was not yet covered in class. Your instructor will do his/her best to cover the material ahead of time but this is not always possible. Please use your textbook as an aid.
4. It's usually a good idea to have your textbook, class notes, and calculator with you when you do OWL.
If you need any help using OWL, please e-mail Jennie Mayer, Chris Shelley, or your instructor for assistance.
