These exercises make use of the information from your DA Plus Diet Analysis print-outs.

1. How many grams of protein do you consume in a day? grams.

2. What percentage of your total calories is contributed by protein? %

Dietary Guidelines suggest that protein should contribute about 10 to 15 percent of total calories. How does your protein intake compare with this recommendation?

3. What is your recommended protein intake from your assignment profile? grams per day.

Is it similar to the recommendation for an "average" person your age and sex as shown in the Protein RDA Table in the protein chapter in your text (p. 189 in Understanding Nutrition, 9th Ed.)?

If you are not of average height or weight, then what do you think would be an appropriate protein intake, and why?

4. From your diet analysis summary determine what % of your RDA protein are you consuming. %

If this is above 100%, you are using protein for energy and possibly fat storage if your total calories also exceed the recommended number.

5. How much of your protein comes from animal sources? (See your daily spreadsheets for protein). grams.

One recommendation suggests that no more than 20 percent of your total protein should come from animal sources.

6. What changes could you make with reference to your overall protein intake to improve your diet?

What effect would an increase in plant sources of protein in your diet have on the total fat content of your diet?
