COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Major topics of this course emphasize graphs and polynomial functions. Other topics include the theory of equations and rational, exponential, inverse, and logarithmic functions. Either MATH 105 or MATH 156 may be taken for credit, not both.

Precalculus seventh edition by Larson and Hostetler, and published by Houghton Mifflin

Placement by assessment, or MATH 099 with a B- or better

Homework/Assignment = 10%

A- : 90 - 92

Quiz = 15%

Average of 3 Tests = 45%

B- : 80 - 82

D  : 60 - 66

Cumulative Final Exam = 20%

 

F: 59 and lower

 

 

ATTENDANCE and WITHDRAWAL POLICY

á             Attendance is required.

á             Arriving to class late and leaving early without prior notice may be counted as absences.

á             Withdrawal deadline

           Last day to withdraw with 100% tuition refund   : 04/04/08 

           Last day to withdraw and avoid ÒWÓ                   : 4/11/08(in person by 5:00pm). 4/13/08(remotely)

           Last day to withdraw and receive 50% refund     : 4/18/08(in person by 5:00pm), 4/19/08(remotely)

           Last day to withdraw with  ÒWÓ but avoid ÒFÓ    : 5/16/08(in person by 5:00pm), 5/18/08(remotely)

 

 

HOMEWORK

á             Homework problem will be announced on daily basis.

á             It is important to do homework when it is assigned as it is easy to fall behind and hard to catch up.

á             All homework should be completed neatly and kept in a paper 3-hole binder.

á             Start each section on a new page and highlight the section number.

 

 

QUIZZES

á             On the day scheduled at the beginning/end of the class you will have a short quiz.

á             MISSED QUIZZES MAY NOT BE MADE UP FOR ANY REASON. Please do not ask.

 

 

TESTS

á             There will be 3 tests during the semester.

á             If you miss a test without any notice, you will get zero.   

            Military Duty, Religious Observances, Court appearances, Jury Duty, and College Sponsored  

            Trips will be accommodated only if I am given proper documentation well in advance.

á             In borderline cases, I reserve the right to subjectively determine grades based on class attendance, participation, quality of work, etc. 

            

FINAL EXAM

           There will be a 2-hour comprehensive final exam on

           Friday, 6/13, 9:30-11:20 am at D103 for section C

           Friday, 6/13, 11:30-1:20 am at D103 for section E .

           You must have a photo ID, graphing calculator and pencils.

 

CALCULATOR POLICY

á             You are required to have a graphing calculator for this course. Bring it to class every day.

á             I will be demonstrating with a Texas Instrument TI-83 plus.

            TI-89, TI-92 or any calculators that perform symbolic algebra are not allowed.

á             Formulas or notes stored in memory will be considered academic dishonesty.

 

OUTSIDE HELP

á             If you need any help in this course, you are encouraged to seek out-of-class help.

á             Office Hours

       I will be glad to help you during my office hours and will arrange other hours if you have a conflict of    

       schedule with the set hours as long as you are attending class regularly.

       M-R 8:00am-8:00pm,    F:8:00-3:30,    Sat/Sun :11:00-4:00

 

CLASS

á             Students are expected to be on time and to stay for the full class period.

á             Please let me know before class if you must leave early.

á             Students are expected to wait fifteen minutes before leaving if the instructor is not present at the 

       scheduled start time of class.                        

 

CLASSROOM POLICY

á             No eating, drinking or smoking is allowed in classrooms.

á             Please turn off beepers, phones and all electronic devices that make any kind of noise.
