Introductory Algebra I

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

Upon successful completion of Math 097, the student should be able to:

 

  1. Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and decimals.

 

  1. Convert a decimal to a fraction and a fraction to a decimal.

 

  1. Convert a percent to a decimal and a decimal to a percent.

 

  1. Compute a percentage from a given problem.

 

  1. Calculate the missing side of a right triangle using the Pythagorean Theorem.

 

  1. Calculate numerical square roots.

 

  1. Add, subtract, multiply and divide real numbers (signed numbers).

 

  1. Simplify a numerical expression using the order of operations.

 

  1. Simplify algebraic expressions by removing parentheses and combining like terms.

 

  1. Solve linear equations and graph a line from an equation, set up and solve application problems using linear equations.

 

  1. Compare mathematical quantities using inequality notation.

 

  1. Plot ordered pairs on a rectangular coordinate system and Interpret data from a table.

 

  1. Compute the slope of a line, given two ordered pairs and interpret the meaning of slope in applied contexts.

 

  1. Identify the solution(s) to a system of equations from graphed lines.

 

  1. Solve a system of linear equations graphically.

 

  1. Simplify exponential expressions (with integer exponents) using the laws of exponents.

 

  1. Convert scientific notation to numerical form and numerical form to scientific notation.

 

  1. Add, subtract and multiply polynomials; divide polynomials by monomials.

 

  1. Identify common factors and factor quadratic trinomials of the form

x2 + bx + c.

 

  1. Solve quadratic equations by factoring and extract information from symbolic quadratic models.
