A Musical Interlude

Welcome! Local time in Bellevue Washington is 2:14:20 PM on Friday, May 9, 2008.

This page is an attempt to share the musical efforts of a couple of guys in my third quarter calculus class Winter 1999. This was an UNUSUAL class ... and the ODDITIES did not end with impromptu ballads delivered by the two gentlemen whose work can be found below. However .... those further details will have to wait for another day.

Messrs. Jacob Tomco and Brian Sebastian will, no doubt, continue to amaze and befuddle their instructors, colleagues, friends, casual aquaintances - WHATever - for years to come. Their work, I believe, speaks for itself.

In order to play these soundfiles you will need to have software on your computer to convert the "zeros and ones" into an analog signal and, of course, a speaker to play that signal. The software part can be packaged as a plugin to your browser and you can configure your browser to play the file when you click on it. Alternatively, you can save the files to your hard drive and play them later.

There are many MP3 players available on the net (search on "MP3" and see what happens.) However, if you are not already able to play "MP3" soundfiles, I recomend you take the time to download Quicktime 4 from Apple. This player is supported by Macs and also Windows machines and there is a plug-in for the most common browsers. Unfortunately, the total download is several MB and you will have to install the software and reboot - but after that you can play MANY kinds of soundfiles and movies from the net without further effort!

Some of these files are rather large ... over a modem line, incompressible data (such as these files) typically download at around 200kB per minute or 5 minutes per megabyte. Be prepared to wait for the files to begin playing ....
